The Holy Grail of Fashion

FOOD, SHELTER AND CLOTHING. Everyone knows that these 3 elements play a pivotal role to the existence and survival of any human being. And fun and frolic amongst other things *ahem ahem*. However, there dwells amongst us one other being. That being doesn’t need food or shelter to survive. Just clothing. It exists deep within each and every girl. It awakens whenever it is in close proximity to clothing stores. You can see her in malls and on the streets, laden with shopping bags. Clothes, shoes and bags feed her soul. Vogue is her bible and Zara, her temple. She delicately paints her face with make-up and her baubles are her babies. Mannequins at the window beckon her to come within and shop, well obviously, why would she resist? She is none other than the Fashionista. The one within us all.

And who, do you ask, is the Fashionista? She is the one with clothes spilling  out of her closet. The one who buys the same clothes in two different colours just for variety. (Lime green or white?) She is the one who has Hulk level strength and gets out the cat claws during Mega sales. (Carrying those 100 shopping bags did come in use!) She is the one who is up to date on all the trends and finally, she is the one, who if depressed finds comfort and solace in a pair of new shoes rather than a guy. ( SHOES > boys!! You know it girls.)

Since this is my first ever blog post, I would like to dedicate it to the most humble and probably one of the most under-appreciated clothing item in all our closets. Revered and worshipped by the fashionista, she knows its worth and how vital it is to any girl’s closet.

It is the HOLY WHITE T-SHIRT

(Cue halo and angelic chorus in the background)

The most basic, and the must have item in every girls closet. Other than the standard LBD of course.

The White T-shirt.. Ah. So simple yet so beautiful. I bet when the saying “Less is more” was made, they kept the white tee in mind. Even Karl Lagerfeld swears by it. What a versatile, time tested yet effortless piece of clothing. It can be worn in any season, and any day of the year.  That being said, a white t-shirt is a must during summers. It can anchor other statement pieces such as pleated maxi skirts, a pair of overalls or even trendy skater skirts. You can also play with your accessories. You can either go heavy or low. Layer up with necklaces or just go minimal with some stacked arm candy. Whether the standard white cotton T-shirts or the slouchy style ones that we see ever so often at Forever21, the classic White T-shirt is here to remain a staple forever.

Its simplicity and multi-faceted uses makes it a tres chic item which can be worn in different ways, giving you a plethora of looks to choose from.

ADVENTURES OF THE WHITE T-SHIRT

1. White T-shirt and Blue denims:

Back to basics!
Back to basics!

THIS combination has been the epitome of cool since time immemorial. A casual white t-shirt put together with a pair of well-fitting blue denims provides for a very clean and crisp look. Not only is it a hassle free look, it also makes you seem effortlessly stylish. A pair of sunnies, white tee, pair of ripped denims and strappy sandals with a messy-do and you are good to go!

2. White T-shirt and Pencil skirts:

White on white done right!
White on white done right!

Now, this look is a great way to amalgamate casual and formal pieces together. Wearing this look with white on white gives you not only a very professional diva-esque look but also keeps you comfortable! Depending on your mood, you could wear a bright pencil skirt to add a pop of colour, or a beautiful slate grey skirt for a great monochromatic look. Nude never goes out of style, so wear a nude coloured lipstick, put your pout on and rock the look. Either way, it is safe to say, you will be turning quite a few heads your way!

3. White T-shirt and printed/ coloured bottoms:

Of bright skinnies and metallics!
Of colours and shiny things!
Print stint!
Print stint!

This is a bright and perky look, seen quite often these days, since coloured and printed bottoms have been all the rage since the past 2 years. It takes a lot of courage to pull off these pants without looking like a colour confused clown. There is always the chance that you have nothing that matches the shade, you don’t have a very clear idea on how to colour block or how to pair the busy bottoms. Nevertheless, the white T-shirt comes to your rescue! Pair up the bottoms with a casual white tee with the sleeves folded and one side of the shirt half tucked in at the front. It will give you a flirty and chic look making even the most hardcore fashionistas ogle at you with admiration.

4. White T-shirt and maxi skirts.

MAXI SKIRTS! Ah, the maxi skirts. A highly ladylike and graceful piece of clothing. It exudes the feeling of softness and refinement. Pastels are undoubtedly the best way to go with these trendy pieces.  And white, being white, a colour of purity and utter fragility paired up as a white t-shirt with these beauties, gives you a light, refreshing, tender and ethereal look as if you magically drifted and floated out of a fairytale. 5. White T-shirts and Blazers:

Trail 'Blazer'
Trail ‘Blazer’

Let’s admit it, everyone. Black blazers are as out of fashion just as much as Gretchen Weiner tried to make ‘Fetch’ happen. (“Gretchen, stop trying to make fetch happen. It is not going to happen.”) Bright, coloured blazers are in and how. However, sometimes pairing up something as sophisticated as a blazer (regardless of the colour) with too much of colour, or even too less colour, can make you look gaudy and tacky or washed out. Wearing a white T-shirt inside blazers neutralizes the colours and brings the entire outfit together. Against bright colours, it dulls it down a notch and against light colours; it makes the outfit a tad bit brighter.

Whatsoever, the humble white T-shirt always has your back. The core that everything in Fashion is based upon. Your canvas to design, style and create.  And as they say…

“Fashion has always been a repetition of ideas but what makes it new is the way you put it together.”
